Blackpool Tower is to undergo a £6m makeover. Owners Leisure Parcs is splashing the cash over the next eight years to take the Victorian landmark back to how it looked when it was first opened in 1894.
Every section of the steel structure will have generations of paint and rust blasted away to reveal the naked metal. It will then be painted in its trademark red.
Bosses say the 518ft world famous landmark will not have looked this good for more than 100 years.
Michael Williams, operations director at Leisure Parcs, said: “This is a massive task we are undertaking.
“This is the investment people don’t often hear about and is all about continually upgrading and improving the structure.
“It is necessary and will not only protect the steelwork for many years to come, but will visually improve the look of the Tower to visitors.”
Other developments as part of the revamp include removing an arcade inside the Tower building so visitors will be able to see the interior steelwork.
