The Priory Hotel at Cartmel will be converted into retail units and self-catering holiday apartments.

George Broadhurst submitted the plans to South Lakeland District Council to change the use of the hotel after finding it was not a viable option in the town any longer.

A bungalow in the grounds at Lower Allithwaite will be demolished and replaced.

A planning officer said there was to be no increase to the access and no parking would have to be provided but the development would have to be in keeping with the area.

Coun Mary Wilson told committee members the Lower Allithwaite Parish Council was opposed to the change of use from a hotel. She added: “The building is of an iconic nature of the period hotel. They also had concerns over the bungalow views from the rear and open glass windows but had a strong feeling they will need to be retained.”

Coun David Williams voted in favour of the plans. He said: “We have a closed building whihc could be a six bedroom hotel which is not viable and unless we grant this it will probably fall into disrepair. I propose we grant this.”

Members agreed and the application was approved.

Cartmel must be one of the best spots to make a good hotel / restaurant product work - as a food destination village in a beautiful part of the world, I can’t see how it could fail…
